Aji WOW: peach Fanta for adults
Aji WOW is my series of unusual Japanese food/drink reviews. 'Aji' (味) means 'flavour', and the name's also a pun on 'ajiwau' (味わう) - 'to enjoy the taste of'.
This time: peach Fanta.
Or, to be precise, 'adult' peach Fanta.
When you see 'adult' on a drink that isn't alcoholic, it tends to mean it's less sweet. Another great example is 'adult hot chocolate', which has darker, more bitter choco content. (Important point: 'less sweet' doesn't always mean 'less sugar'.)
Seeing as it's spring, peach-flavoured stuff is everywhere. Peach soda, peach chuhai, peach desserts. Gets confusing with all the identically pale pink sakura around.
I prefer drinking flavoured water to bog standard normal water, so I though this'd be interesting to try. (That's not 'bog water', by the way...)
Fanta's given their non-adult 'adult' beverage a classier, more mature design. Smart navy blue with hints of gold and light pink. It's a nice look. Next to completely pink cans, it seemed pretty restrained.
"Enjoyable rich peach juice with the deliciousness of puree."
The bottle claims no artificial colours or preservatives, and that it's made with pure water. And... it doesn't say much else. Except for using PEACH on one side and ピーチ on the other.
Before even opening the bottle, I hit a dilemma. It says there's puree mixed in, so I should really shake the liquid up first. But Fanta is well known for fizziness, and you can see loads of bubbles around the peach on the bottle.
Shaking it could've left me in a whole world of trouble. I settled for upending the bottle lightly a few times, like turning an hourglass over. That's what my hair dye always tells me to do.
The loud 'POP' on opening the cap nearly scared me stupid. I expected a volcano. Not one fizzy bubble swooshed up to the neck. Safe!
I'd say the peach juice scent is reasonably authentic. Not bad for 'less than 10% real juice'. The drink's very pale yellow, rather than pink.
One swig and my suspicions were confirmed: this is not sweet.
It's like a weak mix of peach juice and strongly carbonated water. Nothing like the other, much stronger Fanta flavours. Nothing like the Fruit Twist Fanta I lived on back home.
I've never liked drinking plain fizzy water, because the fizz affects the taste. Not in a good way, either. The juice adds a tinge of sweetness, and then the bubbles kick in. And that makes this less nice - and less easy - to drink.
Shaking more of the fizz out does improve the drink. The only time I'll ever appreciate drinking flat Fanta more.
Verdict: 5/10. The grownups are welcome to keep this one.
