Aji WOW: Krispy Kreme summer doughnuts
Aji WOW is my series of unusual Japanese food/drink reviews. 'Aji' (味) means 'flavour', and the name's also a pun on 'ajiwau' (味わう) - 'to enjoy the taste of'.
This time: summer doughnut flavours from Krispy Kreme Japan.
It's 2016, so Krispy Kreme has been in Japan for 10 years now. They have a few anniversary deals on, including an assorted dozen for 2,000 yen (£14 as of this post). I call it a 'deal' - right now, you can get 2 boxes of 12 in the UK for £15.95. Maybe I should get some delivered?
A pair of new 'Ring Ring Summer' flavours are on sale until... today, actually. Good thing I've tried them both already. Lemon glazed on the left, watermelon on the right. They even came in a pair-sized box:
The lemon glaze is tart and refreshing, nice for summer. Not as sweet as I'm used to, and I doubt I could eat more than one at a time. It's a ring doughnut, and the lemon slice is just hiding the hole in the middle. I readily bit into the lemon expecting it to be candied. It wasn't. Wish I'd had some tequila to go with it...
As you can see, the watermelon doughnut was already getting melty. The red is more melon-flavoured icing than a proper glaze, and it didn't want to stay solid. The green chocolate lining the outside was thicker. Chocolate drops also make the black 'pips' in the watermelon. An unusual combo, melon and dark chocolate.
Verdicts: 6/10 for the watermelon, 5/10 for the lemon. Would saying 'these left a slightly bad taste in my mouth' be too predictable?
