Aji WOW: McDonald's tower ice cream
Aji WOW is my series of unusual Japanese food/drink reviews. 'Aji' (味) means 'flavour', and the name's also a pun on 'ajiwau' (味わう) - 'to enjoy the taste of'.
This time: the 'tower size' ice cream from McDonald's.
'Tower size' seems to only be available in select branches for a limited time. I'd seen - and missed out on - this monster ice cream at one Osaka branch of McD's. When it went, I thought the chance to review it had gone forever. Recently I spotted it again at another one. Right, I said to nobody in particular. Time to take on the tower.
That's a pretty generous amount of ice cream. It's not gargantuan, but it qualifies as a tower compared to your normal ice cream size. I imagine there are limits on the structural integrity of ice cream towers. Here's the cone stood up properly next to the cup:
The cup's medium-sized. As you can see, the ice cream just about clears the top of the straw.
Incidentally, the cup contains limited-edition Okinawa pineapple milkshake, which I was going to do a full review of. I changed my mind pretty quickly - it was far too thick to drink, and the pineapple had the artificial tang of Spangles. Okinawan food doesn't usually let me down.
A bite of the ice cream revealed it to be impressively thick too. That's a good thing in an ice cream, especially one this tall. There was no danger of it falling over.
Unfortunately, when I took the paper cover off, the very bottom of the cone got smooshed. So some of the ice cream fell out of the end instead. That'll teach me to be a greedy guts.
The 'tower size' is only available in the one vanilla flavour, presumably so nobody faffs over their choice. I admit I would've liked to try this in strawberry. It's still delicious in vanilla. Not sickly sweet, otherwise I'd never have finished the thing.
Verdict: 9/10, give me strawberry or chocolate for the extra point. Otherwise it'd be a slam dunk, just like this performance by Ronald:
