Big Yellow Pencil
Over the last week or so, D&AD yellow and black pencils have been absconding from London agencies. Turns out Lucky Generals nicked them all to promote the next awards.
It seemed a little obvious that the stunt was planned, even if we weren't sure who by. There's got to be at least one creative director who still sleeps with their pencil under their pillow. These things aren't easy to pinch. They don't wander off when the last art director finally slumps, defeated, over their Mac at 4am.
Now, readers who know me even slightly well should be aware I never miss a chance to knock up a parody. So, with apologies to everyone, here's my take on the missing pencil shenanigans. In homage to the song Big Yellow Taxi:
Big Yellow Pencil
They paved adland and put up a parking lot With a global network branch, a boutique and an independent shop
Don't all you creatives know That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's gone They paved adland and dug all the pencils up They took all the concepts and ran them with PPC Then they charged all the clients a couple of grand just to see 'em
Don't the CDs seem to know That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's gone They paved adland and now everyone does the same stuff Hey Generals, Generals, put down that D&AD now Give me spots on the radio But LEAVE me the awards and the briefs Please!
Don't anyone 'round here know That you don't know what you've got ‘til its gone They paved adland with gold from a Cannes Lion's butt Late last night, I heard the front door slam And my big yellow pencil was taken away by 'the man'.
Don't the pencil holders know That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's gone They paved adland and put up a parking lot
